Farewell cake

It has been a very long week because it's our quarter end and I have a tight deadline at work so this is a very nice way of diverting my attention to something else other than spreadsheet and emails. I wanted to bake a cake for my manager who is leaving the company this week. I've enjoyed working for her and she's always been so kind to me. I wanted to make something special for her and my way of appreciation is through baking her a cake of course *grin*.

I couldn't decide the cake design I wanted to make for her. I know that it would be something that would represent or reflect her personality somehow. I looked online for ideas and there's so many beautiful pictures of cakes that I got so overwhelmed. I thought of making something simple and elegant so I started to cover the cake with a fondant tinted with Ivory. I thought that was a good start...then I stopped and looked at the cake on the table and it was almost like looking at a blank canvas and thought why not go do something different....something unpredictable *smile* And then it hit me that this is actually a good opportunity for me to copy some ideas from other people's design and at the same time still make the cake personal for my manager.

I looked at the pictures of cakes that stood out for me and thought hmmm maybe I can copy that. Yes! copy that. So, I really can't take full credit of this creation because the design has been done by someone else so I thank those that inspired me and allow me to copy their design *grin*...The girl that loves to cook (Su Yin) and Martha. Here's the cake....taaadaaa!!

DetailsSince my manager is taking some time off before going back to the corporate world, I wanted to represent this side to show that she now has the time to sit back and relax *grin* (Su Yin design)

Her hobby is quilting. So here's my attempt of quilting. I did an inlay technique and it supposedly have the quilt effect but it didn't really turn out as I wanted. I guess its ok and I think I would do it differently next time. I'll just have to take my time and thought it out well.

She also like fabrics so this side represents fabrics...I saw the picture from Martha's book and it was a wedding cake decorated with fabric like forms using fondant. I love the idea and I thought it was beautiful. So here's my version of it.

I wanted to put the word "goodbye" on this side but I didn't have letter cutter so I left it blank. The idea was for her to say goodbye to payroll and revenue. (Su Yin design).

Overall, I was pleased with the outcome. Of course, there's still a lot of room for improvement and I'm learning along the way and enjoyed every minute of the process.
